Junior Firefighter Program
With the overwhelming support from our community partners, we are heading into our seventh Junior Firefighter camp.
Junior firefighter programs give twenty-five (25) young people (10-12 years) in our community the opportunity to learn about fire, rescue, and emergency medical service response organizations. The program is operated in a safe, controlled, educational and fun way. The camp is divided into two (2) components; previous year’s graduates are invited back for a three (3) day course in July. The second component is the August camp, with three (3) days of hands-on learning what it’s like to be in the emergency services.
Some of the benefits of a Junior Firefighter Program include:
- Allowing youth to gain insight and interest in becoming long-term members of emergency services;
- Increasing awareness among youth about volunteering and supporting fire and emergency services;
- Leadership development for Canadian youth who are tomorrow’s leaders; and
- Educating parents and care-givers on the importance of encouraging volunteerism.
It is anticipated that participants will go home at the end of the week with some life skills, an appreciation for those who volunteer in their communities and a respect for not only themselves but for others as well.
