The Town of Fort Erie Property Standards Committee conducts and hears public appeals of property standards orders that have been issued under the Ontario Building Code and the Towns Property Standards By-law. After hearing an appeal, the committee has the power to confirm, modify or rescind the order, demolish or repair, or extend time for complying with an order.
The Town of Fort Erie has set out standards to ensure property owners maintain their properties within the community. The Property Standards By-law 186-08 (link) regulates items of safety and general upkeep of properties and buildings.
If a property does not conform to the by-law, a Property Standards Officer investigates and determines if the Property Standards By-law has been violated. If so, a Property Standards Order is issued to the owner.
The Property Standards Committee is a quasi-judicial body comprised of 5 citizens appointed by Council to consider appeals to orders issued by the Property Standards Officer. It is the Committees role to make an informal, impartial decision.
Meetings are held on an as required basis, they are scheduled once an appeal is received. The Committee must hold a hearing if an owner or occupant upon whom an Order has been served is not satisfied with the terms and conditions of the Order.
Terms of Reference for the Property Standards Committee was adopted by By-law 71-2023.
