FORT ERIE (October 10, 2025) — On September 25th at the Welland Provincial Offences Courthouse, A Fort Erie resident was convicted under the Town’s Animal Welfare By-law No.73-2021 for failing to comply with a Dangerous Dog Order, originally issued in 2021. The conviction resulted in more than $3,000 in fines imposed by the court.
Following an incident in 2021, the resident’s dog was officially designated as a Dangerous Dog under the Town’s by-law. This designation carries several mandatory safety requirements to protect the public and other animals. These conditions may include specific fencing, signage, muzzling, and leash requirements, among others.
An investigation by local Animal Control Officers determined that the dog owner had failed to meet these obligations. Charges were subsequently laid, and a conviction was secured in court.
This case is an essential reminder that Dangerous Dog Orders have legal obligations, not optional guidelines. They are critical public safety tools designed to reduce the risk of harm within the community. The courts treat non-compliance with these orders seriously, as demonstrated by the significant fines imposed in this case.
The Town of Fort Erie urges all dog owners to be fully aware of their responsibilities under the Animal Welfare By-law No.73-2021.
