Ontario Investment in Water Infrastructure Unlocks New Housing Potential in Fort Erie

FORT ERIE, ON – August 12, 2025 – The Town of Fort Erie is set to benefit from a significant provincial investment to modernize water systems in Niagara and enable new housing development. Through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF), the Town will receive $2.2 million toward the Walden Boulevard Upgrade — a critical infrastructure project that will unlock the potential development of nearly 300 new housing units.

Announced as part of Ontario’s $95 million commitment to protect and enhance water and irrigation infrastructure in Niagara, this funding supports the replacement and extension of key water assets along Walden Boulevard, as well as new storm and sanitary sewer systems. These improvements are essential to supporting future growth while ensuring reliable services for residents.

The project includes:

375 metres of watermain replacement and 250 metres of watermain extension
580 metres of new storm sewer installation
200 metres of PVC sanitary sewer extension to support future development frontage

Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2025.

Once complete, the infrastructure will directly enable 297 new housing units, contributing to Fort Erie’s long-term growth and housing supply goals.
