What is a total solar eclipse / solar eclipse: |
A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth. A total solar eclipse is the same process, but the moon completely blocks the sun. Being in the direct path, Fort Erie will experience a dark sky, and the sun's corona will be visible for approximately 3-5 minutes. How long with the moon totally cover the sun in Fort Erie? |
Fort Erie will experience the longest duration of this incredible astronomical phenomenon seen anywhere in Canada because it is the farthest southwest location along the path of totality. Observers will see the moon completely cover the sun for 3 minutes and 46 seconds! |
How to safely view the solar eclipse: |
It is unsafe to look at the eclipse without specialized eye protection. If you view the eclipse with the naked eye, it can cause damage to your retina and eyesight. Eclipse glasses or specialized solar viewers are the safest way to view the eclipse. The Town has purchased Eclipse Viewing Glasses and will be available to Fort Erie residents at Town Hall and our 3 libraries in early March. Best places to view the eclipse in Fort Erie: |
With the Eclipse crossing directly over Fort Erie, residents won't even have to leave their homes to have a front row seat. Designated viewing areas might be very busy, viewing the eclipse from home is the most reliable and safe way for residents to view this once in a lifetime experience. Visitors: If you are visiting Fort Erie for this event, there are plenty of amazing viewpoints around Town. There could be increased traffic on April 8th with a large amount of visitors coming to Fort Erie. Please visit our dedicated viewing areas page for location information and maps. |

When will the next total solar eclipse be? |
After the April 8, 2023 total solar eclipse, Fort Erie and the Niagara Region will not see another total solar eclipse until October 26, 2144. This truly is a once in a lifetime event. |
What time does the eclipse start? |
The total eclipse cycle starts around 2:04PM and ends around 4:32PM. The eclipse totality only lasts a few minutes and starts at 3:20PM. |
Will the eclipse be visible with overcast skies? |
Sadly if there are overcast skies on the day of the eclipse some viewing may be blocked. Other effects of the eclipse would still be visible including the dark skies and drop in temperature. |
