In celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, the Town of Fort Erie submitted a grant request to the Niagara Community Foundation for participation in the Canada 150 Mosaic project. The project was a nationwide initiative that involved 150 murals in 150 communities.
The Town was successful in its grant request. The Canada 150 Mosaic team led two workshops, to create our Community Mosaic Mural. The Mural consists of 400 tiles made by community members, based on the artist Lewis Lavoie's design.
The Town worked to provide one simple iconic object that represents the community. As a result, the Old Fort is the iconic object that the mural focused on.
Participants were encouraged to leave their mark by creating a painting on a 4” x 4” tile representing their community from their creative perspective. Every painting tells a story and has become a piece of a much bigger story. Some of the tiles were pre-painted by local artists. The project encouraged participation by all members of the community.
The Mural was unveiled on June 19, 2017 in the Leisureplex. Here is a video by Cogeco. The mural will also link virtually with all other murals across the Country. Visit the project web-site.
