Ontario Building Code

Prior to December 31, 1975, the province of Ontario did not have a Building Code and each Ontario municipality had the authority to enforce its own building rules.

The first Ontario Building Code came into force on December 31, 1975, which introduced the first Ontario Building Code (OBC). It superseded all municipal laws regarding design and construction of buildings and set out technical requirements for the construction and demolition of buildings.

The primary purpose of the OBC is to promote public safety by applying appropriate uniform building standards by creating uniform building regulations throughout the Province.

The Ontario Building Code Act provides the authority for the regulations which are noted in the Ontario Building Code for construction of buildings in Ontario. See below.
