About Mayor Wayne Redekop
Born and raised in Fort Erie.
Attended Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island; University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario (B.A.); Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, Ontario (LL.B.). Practising lawyer in Ridgeway, 1977-2022. Former president of the Fort Erie and Welland County Law Associations.
Councillor for the Town of Fort Erie, 1991-1994. Mayor of the Town of Fort Erie, 1997-2006, during which time was Chair of the Mayors Slot Revenue Coalition; member of Niagara River Bi-National Mayors Coalition, Ontario Mayors Automotive Coalition, Mayors Transportation Corridors Coalition and Niagara Parks Commission; established first municipal Gaming Corporation in Ontario, a Community Health and Wellness Committee, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee and strategic alliances with City of Buffalo, Niagara Parks Commission, Buffalo-Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority and Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators. Promoted municipal administration credo of efficiency, accountability and responsiveness.
Mayor of the Town of Fort Erie since 2014, during which time the municipality has invested heavily in infrastructure renewal, a variety of new public parks and engaged residents in a number of policy initiatives while promoting the value of the Town’s expansive waterfront, rich natural heritage and opportunities for growth and prosperity. Currently involved in initiatives to promote local access to health and primary care services, protection of the Town’s natural and cultural heritage, inclusion and diversity, economic development, job creation and creating partnerships and strategic alliances to advance the interests of the residents and businesses in the community. A member of the Niagara Region Council, Chair of the Region’s Budget Committee and Vice Chair of the Niagara Transit Commission.
Member Ridgeway Lions Club, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Bowen Road Women’s Institute and the Niagara Parks Commission. Former member of Niagara Land Trust (first Chair, 2009-11); D’Youville College, Buffalo (Trustee 2008-2017, Chair 2013-2015); Fort Erie Economic Development Corporation; Fort Erie Multicultural Centre; and various community organizations, including Fort Erie Mayor’s Task Force to Save Our Hospital (Co-Chair), , Meals on Wheels, Fort Erie Public Library Board, Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, Head Injury Association of Fort Erie, Fundraising Committee for Crystal Ridge Library branch, Ridgeway Blood Donor Clinic (Convenor, 1990-2009) and Douglas Memorial Hospital Board.
Married for over 48 years to Cathy Green-Redekop, who passed away in January 2025. Three adult daughters: Lindsay, Hilary and Kylie. Three grandchildren: Brody, Cullen and Lonnie. Qualified for and completed (with oldest daughter) the Boston Marathon, 2008 and 2009.
