Memorial Programs

Memorial Bench Program

A memorial bench program is a heartfelt initiative that honors departed loved ones by installing dedicated benches in public spaces, like parks or trails. Individuals or families can participate by purchasing a bench with a personalized dedication plaque, creating a lasting tribute. These benches serve as tranquil spots for reflection and contribute to the beautification of Fort Erie by fostering a sense of community remembrance.

Application Process

Applications received between September 1st and March 31st will be processed in April, and benches will be installed in the summer. Applications received between April 1st and August 31st will undergo processing in September, and benches will be installed in the fall.

Memorial Bench Program Application

NOTE: We will only process the application once the donation has been received.

Memorial bench donations are valid for a period of twenty (20) years. At the end of the 20-year term, the donor may submit a new application and donation to renew the bench location. If a renewal application is not received, the location will become available for a new memorial bench donation.

Memorial Bench Cost

The donation cost for a memorial bench is $2,500. This amount covers a portion of the total cost, which includes the bench, a dedicated plaque, a concrete pad, and professional installation. The remaining cost will be covered by the town. Upon payment completion, donors have the option to receive a charitable tax receipt. Payments can be made at Town Hall and are accepted in the forms of cheque, cash, or debit.

Memorial Bench Locations

Where are memorial benches permitted?

Memorial benches may be placed on Town-owned property, including parks, cemeteries, trails, and select municipal rights-of-way, subject to site suitability and approval. Staff will work with applicants to identify appropriate and meaningful locations whenever possible.

Where are memorial benches not permitted?

Some parks have reached capacity and are no longer able to accommodate additional memorial benches. These currently include Waverly Beach, Crystal Beach Waterfront Park, and Bay Beach.
To ensure safety and accessibility for all park users, proposed locations must not restrict sightlines, interfere with utilities, or conflict with required safety setbacks. All locations are reviewed and approved by the Town to ensure they meet accessibility, safety, and operational standards.

Memorial Tree Program

Much like the Memorial Bench Program, the Memorial Tree Program is an initiative that honours departed loved ones by installing a dedicated tree in a Park/Cemetery. With a donation of $500.00 towards the installation of a tree, a bronze plaque will be on display with your chosen text (subject to Town approval). Please be aware that the town's arborist will select the tree of the native species best suited for the requested location.
