Street Lighting

Find a streetlight, report a problem or learn how to ask for a new light.

Streetlights help drivers, cyclists and people walking see roads and sidewalks. They are not installed to light private property or provide home security.

Is there an immediate safety concern related to a streetlight?

Call the Town at 905-871-1600 if:

  • a pole has fallen or been hit;
  • wires are exposed or on the ground; or
  • a broken light is hanging over a road or sidewalk.

Do not use the online form for an emergency.

Report a streetlight problem

You can report a light that is out, dim, flickering, on during the day, blocked by a tree or damaged.

Step 1: Find the light on the map

  1. Select the Search button. It looks like a magnifying glass.
  2. Enter the nearest address or intersection.
  3. Zoom in until you see the coloured streetlight dots.
  4. Select the dot for the affected light.
  5. Write down the Light ID and owner code.

The address search only takes you to the area. You must select the coloured dot to identify the light.

Step 1: Open the streetlight map

Cannot use or find the light on the map?
Use the reporting form and give the nearest address, the side of the road and a short description. You can also call the Town at 905-871-1600.

Who owns the light?

The coloured dots below match the streetlight map. The owner code is also shown, so you do not need to rely on colour.

Report these lights to the Town

  • DEVLPR — Developer
  • TOFE — Town of Fort Erie
  • TOFE FACILITY — Town facility
  • TOFE/MTO — Town of Fort Erie / Ministry of Transportation
  • TOFE/NPC — Town of Fort Erie / Niagara Parks
  • NPC — Niagara Parks Commission
  • TOFE/RMON — Town of Fort Erie / Niagara Region

You may report a DEVLPR light to the Town. The Town may send the report to the developer. Town repair times do not apply if the street has not yet been taken over by the Town.

Report these lights to the owner

Step 2: Complete the reporting form

In the box called “Where is the street light located?”, enter:

  • the Light ID;
  • the owner code; and
  • the nearest address or intersection.

Example:
Light 3151 — TOFE/RMON — 1 Municipal Centre Drive

If three or more lights in a row are out, give the first and last Light IDs and the number of lights that are out.

If the light is not shown on the map, give the nearest address, the side of the road and a short description of the pole.

Step 2: Open the reporting form

How long will a repair take?

One or two lights out

28 days

The Town aims to check and repair a routine light problem within 28 days.

If the problem involves a pole or the electrical system, the Town aims to check the problem and start the repair within 28 days.

Three or more lights out

7 or 14 days

Ontario rules require shorter repair times when:

  • three or more lights in a row on the same side of the road are out; or
  • 30% or more of the lights in any one-kilometre section are out.

The Town aims to repair these problems within:

  • 7 days on a Class 1 or Class 2 road; or
  • 14 days on a Class 3, Class 4 or Class 5 road.

The time starts when the Town becomes aware of the problem. You do not need to know the road class. Town staff will check it.

A repair may take longer if it needs a new pole, underground work, special parts or help from another utility.

These repair times apply only to lights maintained by the Town. They do not apply to private lights, streets not yet taken over by the Town or lights maintained by another organization.

How do I ask for a new streetlight?

New streetlight requests are reviewed under the Town's Street Lighting Policy. Approval depends on the location, need, cost and available funding.
