Media Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FORT ERIE, ON (May 20, 2026) - The Town of Fort Erie is proud to announce that its new Official Plan has received approval from the Province of Ontario, making Fort Erie the first local area municipality in Niagara Region to receive provincial approval of a new Official Plan. Previously, local municipalities' Official Plans in Niagara were approved by Niagara Region.
The new Official Plan will guide growth and development in Fort Erie to 2051 and sets out updated policies for land use, housing, employment, natural heritage, agriculture, cultural heritage, infrastructure, and community planning.
“This is an important milestone for Fort Erie. Being the first municipality in Niagara Region to receive provincial approval of a new Official Plan speaks to the commitment, professionalism, and forward-thinking approach of Council and staff. It is also an affirmation that Fort Erie is firmly on the Province's radar. This plan gives Fort Erie a clear path to manage growth, protect what makes our community special and prepare for our future.”
- Mayor Wayne Redekop
The Official Plan is one of the Town’s most important planning documents. It establishes where and how the community will grow while guiding decisions on development, housing, transportation, employment, land use, environmental protection, agriculture, and community services.
“The new Official Plan provides a strong policy foundation that reflects Fort Erie’s local needs while aligning with provincial and regional planning direction. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to all staff and contributors who supported the project throughout. Their input, expertise, and commitment were essential to completing this important work for the community.”
- Edward Terry, Manager of Policy and Community Planning
The new Official Plan also supports the Town’s long-term vision for complete, connected, and sustainable communities. It will help guide responsible development while balancing growth with environmental stewardship, infrastructure planning, and quality of life.
“This is a major achievement for the Planning and Development Services team and for the Town as a whole. The approval of the new Official Plan positions Fort Erie to move forward with clarity and confidence. It gives residents, businesses, developers, and community partners a modern planning framework that supports well-managed growth.”
- Anamika Dilwaria, Director of Planning and Development Services
The Official Plan Review included public consultation and technical analysis to ensure the updated plan reflects the evolving needs of the community. The province’s decision brings the updated policy framework into effect, following review for consistency with provincial policy and conformity with the Planning Act.
"The modernized new Official Plan supports the Town’s ability to plan responsibly, attract investment, and deliver on Council’s priorities. I want to thank staff, Council, community members, and all partners who contributed to this important work.”
- Chris McQueen, Chief Administrative Officer
The Town will post the final consolidated version of the Official Plan, including all approved modifications, in the coming weeks on the Town’s website.
