StopGap Ramp Project
Applications for free access ramps remain open. Please note that based on budget constraints, we have created a waitlist and will place orders based on volume.
The Town of Fort Erie’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, in partnership with the StopGap Foundation, are working to increase accessibility in the Town of Fort Erie.
In 2023, a pilot project took place in the Ridgeway and Crystal Beach area, with nine businesses successfully applying for a StopGap temporaryramp to allow access into their building that had a single front step that created a barrier for some.
In 2024, Council approved additional funding to open the project up to all Fort Erie businesses and ten additional ramps were purchased. The ramps are placed temporarily in order to access the building and then brought back in so as not to impede pedestrian traffic. Signage is provided to businesses and contact information made available in order to notify the business that the ramp is needed.

A little bit about the Program:
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria.
- Businesses and organizations located within the Fort Erie boundaries
- Must have a single step not exceeding 9” tall from the walkway to the front entrance, or the entrance most commonly used by the public (there must also be enough clearance for people to access the ramp once it is deployed)
- Businesses will sign an agreement for use of the ramp between StopGap Foundation and the business owner
- Businesses must provide proof of $2 million insurance
- Ramps must be maintained and kept free from snow and ice
By entering into an agreement with StopGap Foundation, a ramp is then designed specifically for your entry way. This does not trigger any other accessibility requirements as the ramp is made available on a temporary basis.
The Town recognizes that preventing new barriers, reducing and removing existing barriers, and enhancing access is essential to providing increased opportunities that foster independence, inclusion and dignity for people of all ages and abilities.
The StopGap Foundation’s mission aims to create a world where every person can access every space. A world free of barriers will help give everyone the opportunity to live a life full of independence, spontaneity, and ultimate fulfillment.
