About The Point Abino Lighthouse

The Point Abino Lighthouse is on the rocky north shore of Lake Erie in Fort Erie. It was constructed in 1917 by the Department of Marine and Fisheries in response to increased traffic at the east end of Lake Erie, located between the high and low water marks on the rocky shoreline of Point Abino.

Since its decommissioning in 1995, the Point Abino Lighthouse was designated as a 'Classified' Heritage Building. In addition, the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office established it as a National Historic Site and a Classified Federal Building.

The Lighthouse consists of a deck, tower and fog alarm building.

Note: No vehicles or pets will be allowed past the gated area.

Point Abino Lighthouse Tours - Information and FAQ

Tours stage from 1010 Point Abino Road south, there is a paved lot on the north side of the road, the tours congregate at the park area across on the south side.

Tour buses leave promptly at the scheduled, please arrive a minimum of 15 minutes early to ensure you don't miss the tour bus. The buses are not accessible to many mobility devices.

Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled for any missed tour times.

Patrons are requested to dress appropriately for the site and weather conditions. Access to the site requires traversing uneven, sloped, and wet surfaces, including stairs. The historic site is not accessible.

Patrons are required to stay with the tours, adjacent properties are private and are off limits to patrons. Tour guides will be happy to provide clarity once on site.

No, tours continue rain or shine. The bus is enclosed, but the walk to the lighthouse is exposed to the elements.

The interior of the historic lighthouse is not accessible due to the original design being an elevated structure to protect it from lake surges. However, arrangements can be made to provide accessible access to the site where it can be viewed from the shoreline. Please call the Town (905-871-1600) if you would like to make these arrangements.

Each tour takes1 hour and 15 minutes from the time you board the bus to the time you return. Approximately 50 minutes are spent on site at the lighthouse.

Yes, a limited number of pedestrian visits are available on non tour dates between June 21 an Labour Day annually. These visits require guests to walk in the site (approximately 1.5 kilometres each way) and does not include access to the inside of the lighthouse, only exterior viewing is available. Parking is available at 1010 Point Abino Road south, there is a paved parking lot on the north side of the road, from there, guests can walk to the gatehouse to check in and show their ticket booked through Eventbrite.

Guests are required to stay on the main road while travelling to the lighthouse, adjacent properties and streets are private and are off limits to guests. Access on the main road beyond the lighthouse is also prohibited.

Site visits include access to the exterior of the lighthouse only, interior visits are only available during regular, guided tour dates.

The distance to the lighthouse is approximately 1.5 kilometres each way, patrons are permitted to walk to the lighthouse and back, vehicles of any kind are not permitted.

Guests may take photos or videos of the lighthouse. Guests are not permitted to bring alcohol or animals (with the exception of a documented service animal) onto the property. Please refrain from littering.

Guests may access the site anytime within the allotted ticket time, but must be back outside of the gate prior to 6:00p.m.

Weekday site visits take place between 3:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. weekend visits are from 10:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. Guests are reminded to leave enough time to travel back outside the main gate before 6:00p.m.

Yes, regular tours of the lighthouse occur 8 times each summer. These tours include transportation to the lighthouse site and access to the interior main floor of the lighthouse. Please visit our website for more information and tickets for these tours.
