Water Meters

The Town of Fort Erie is implementing a program to replace water meters with updated technology that enhances reading accuracy and reliability. The new meters use cellular endpoints to support more efficient and consistent readings. The meter also can identify leakages or backflow events. It can also download a consumption history archive used for analysis and review. This is a mandatory program in accordance with By-Law No. 66-2016. 
Each year, approximately 2,000 accounts are selected as part of a structured replacement program across the municipality.

This initiative ensures accurate water measurement, reliable billing, and improved service for residents and businesses.

Water meters are designed to last many years, but over time they can lose accuracy or stop functioning as efficiently.

Replacing older meters helps to:

  • Maintain accurate water usage and billing
  • Improve detection of leaks and unusual consumption
  • Enhance system efficiency and reliability
  • Support long-term infrastructure planning

What happens during installation?

  • Installation takes approximately 30 to 90 minutes
  • Water service will be temporarily shut off during the work
  • The technician will install, test, and activate the new meter

Do I need to be home?

Yes. An adult (18 years or older) must be present to allow access to the water meter.

Is there a cost?

No. There is no charge for the standard water meter replacement as part of the Town’s program.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

To ensure a smooth installation:

  • Clear the area around your water meter
  • Ensure the meter is easily accessible
  • Secure pets
  • Provide safe access for the technician

What are my responsibilities as a homeowner?

Property owners are responsible for:

  • Providing access to the water meter
  • Protecting the meter from damage
  • Notifying the Town if there are issues with the meter

What will my next water bill look like?

Your first bill after installation may include:

  • A final reading from your old meter
